Seine River(France)

Seine River

The river of 776km long runs through Paris valley, in the north of France, from the east to the west and flows in to the English Channel. Surface of the basin is 78000km2 and it winds everywhere, but its calm stream and great volume of water were appreciated for active use of water transport. The stream cuts through downtown Paris; Paris without the Seine or the Seine without Paris is unimaginable. Until 19th century, one could find "water sellers" drawing water from the Seine and carried it to each household. Also it serves as a watercourse that carries down an enormous quantity of sewage water of the city; well developed network of sewage system of Paris is famous. After 19th century, the river improvements of large scale, such as building lock gates, dredging and shoreline protection works, were carried out and the Seine became the way we see it today. The Seine also inspired countless chansons, paintings, and literature.
