Lake Mendota(U.S.A.)

Lake Mendota

New lake born in the glacial epoch, with the surface 40km2 and the depth 12m located in the south of Wisconsin, U.S.A. The lake became known to the world from the end of 19th century, for its course of struggles against eutrophication. Accepting waste water of people who lived around the lake caused proliferation of water plant, so the sewage was first treated and drained to the lake. However the problem of eutrophication was not solved and the large scaled project of detouring drainage, which does not allow a drop of waste water to be drained back to the lake, was carried out. This project was completed by 1980, but the improvement of water quality is not making much progress. Today agricultural effuluent is becoming a problem. Transparency of the water is low but the lake is surrounded by the park, rich in green, that offers people wonderful place for relaxing. There is a worldly known Limnology Institute at the University of Wisconsin by the lake.
