Recycling rubber tires

Palm Beach, Mangochi District (Then)
Lilongwe Market, Lilongwe City (Now)
(Africa-Malawi)

In the photo of 1946, people are taking strings out of an old tire and making a beach seine net. There was no synthetic net at the time, and the beach seine net made of tire was valuable. Even today we can find rubber tiresÕ strings everywhere in peopleÕs everyday life:for examples, codes for tying roof or shelves and strings for making necklaces for tourists. At the market of capital city called Lilongwe, old man was selling rubber sandals that were made of tires. But today the rubber tire sandals are becoming hard to find because of new market of used shoes. (Y. Kada)
