From ferry to a bridge
Liwonde, Kasungu District (Africa-Malawi)
People used to take a ferry to go to Liwonde located at the ford of Shire River: the only natural outflow of the lake Malawi. The bridge was built in 1965 and it made people, bike and cars possible to come and go. Barrage, which allows to control the water level, is constructed under the bridge. When we take an example from Lake Biwa, it has same functions as the barrage of Nangou, Otsu. Upstream side from this bridge has become the Liwonde National Park that is rich in hippopotamus, crocodiles and other wild animals. (Y. Kada)
