Refrigerator is not popular in Malawi, so that the fish is first dried or smoked, and carried to the urban markets. These fish were used to be put in containers made with bamboo and reed, and carried by bikes. They were called Bike Boy. Transporting the fish by trucks and buses became popular today, but the bike boys are always there to spend one whole day to carry vegetables from mountain area to the lake, and bring back fish to their hometown as a broker. Today, people of Malawi are said to take their 70% of protein from fish. The freshwater fish is an important food in Malawi. (Y. Kada)
