Digging the Sands and Fetching water

Palm Beach, Mangochi District (Then)
Mlowe Village, Nkhotakhota District (Now)
(Africa-Malawi)

When the lake water is dirty or the shore of lake is far, people dig a hole in the sands to get water. This is an idea still used today just like the old time. When we look at closely at what the women once wore, we find that simple cloth is wrapping around their body. The clothes with primary colors (called Chitenje in Malawi) have become a symbol of today's African women, but we can say that it's a relatively new tradition. Women used to make their own water containers by themselves, but today the container is replaced by a bucket made by professional artisans. (Y. Kada)
