Fetching Water

Palm Beach, Mangochi District
(Africa-Malawi)

Getting up in the morning and going to fetch the lake water while it is still dark, is a job for women and young children. Boys do fetch the water when they are young, but after 10 years old, they gradually stop doing it. This division of labor becomes visible. Earthenware container is replaced by tin bucket to fetch the water. Women's clothes have also changed to modern dresses. Fetching water and washing laundry are always done by the lake. Using the lake water is indispensable for living in the past and present. (Y. Kada)
