Changes in fishermen's quarter

Fishermen's quarter, City of Meillerie, Departement of Haute-Savoie
(France)

The climate of this part of the French coast is much more severe, and is less favorable for agriculture. In consequence, the inhabitants tended to rely on the resources of the lake. Formerly, the inhabitants of this village earned their living by fishing, or--from 1845 onwards--by working the stone quarries, which employed more than 500 people. With the disappearance of these occupations the village has become deserted. It would now be difficult to imagine that Meillerie was formerly the most prosperous village on the French coast." (C. Bertola)
