Waters colored of quarries

The confluence of the Arve and the Rhone, State of Geneva
(Switzerland)

Lake Léman lies on the course of the Rhone. As it leaves the lake, the green waters of the Rhone intermingle with the brown waters of the Arve coming from the Mont-Blanc massif. The exploitation of natural materials, such as stones, gravel and sand, was formerly common practice, and for centuries sub-lacustrine quarries were worked in the depths of the Léman. Today, the site has been re-developed as a pedestrian area. Improving the ecological aspects of the rivers and lakeside areas has become a priority, and is called "renaturation" (C. Bertola)
