Water Carrier of Montmartre

Montmartre,18th district of Paris
(France)

This photo shows a water carrier supplying drinking water to a Parisian. A balancing pole in wood hanging two chains helps him stabilizing the distance between the wood buckets he carries on both side of his body. The water carriers disappeared in the early 20th century, but there were still 10 fountains for water carriers in Paris in 1905. (P. Pellegrini)
