The Lake Biwa Canal and view of Okazaki

Torii Town, Awataguchi, Higasiyama Ward, Kyoto
(Japan)

This photo shows the Lake Biwa Canal and the outskirts of Okazaki in the middle of Meiji era. We suppose this photo was taken around this period of time, since we can find a main gate of the 4th exposition of The Development of Domestic Industry and Commerce, held in 1895, and a Japanese flag. Today, there is a commemoration house of the canal, and we can find materials on history of its construction. The exposition site became a zoo today. During holidays, a lot of families visit the zoo and young people enjoy fishing Large Mouth Bass in the canal. (A. Kobayashi)
