Construction of the Lake Biwa Canel was a big époque-making enterprise for reviving Kyoto, that was declining its vitality after transference of capital to Tokyo. The construction was completed in April 1890 (Meiji 23). Japan's first hydroelectric power station and an incline which carries boats in between 35 meters differences of height, the newest technology of the time was employed. In front, we can find the third tunnel, on the left the fourth tunnel and further, the entrance of hydroelectric power station, and a building on the right is the top of incline. (A. Kobayashi)
