Yamashina Canal
Misasagi, Yamashina Ward, Kyoto (Japan)
The Lake Biwa Canal was constructed in order to make sailing cannal between Kyoto and Lake Biwa and also to generate electricity. New engineering techniques never used by Japanese before were applied to construct the canal, and it was the enterprise which cost more than ten times of city's one year budget. It was completed in April 1890 (Meiji 23). At 1902 (Meiji 45) the second canal was built to send the drinking water to Kyoto. Now the Lake Biwa Canal continues to supply 20 tonnage water per every second to 1450000 people in Kyoto. (A. Kobayashi)
