Railroad bridge over the Yahara River
East Washington Avenue, Madison (U.S.A.)
1887 saw the completion of a railroad system which linked Madison to the rest of America. Nine lines converged on the city, and this bridge was constructed to carry one of the railroad lines. As was the flavour of those times, the riverbanks have been cleared of all 'bothersome' vegetation, and a gravel path added, for horseriding and walkers. Although no longer dependent on railroads, the early railroad bridge still stands, and is regularly used. An extensive riverbank treeline has been allowed to develop. (A. Rossiter)
